Ungari Kino is taking place at Genialistide klubi (Magasini 5). Events can be visited with a day ticket, which costs 50 EEK.
We present documentaries shown on the 16th October in proud cooperation with Worldfilm. This event takes place in the lecture’s room of the Estonian National Museum (Kuperjanovi 9). Free entrance.

The story is simple; it’s the characters who are more important. A woman corrupted by love and a boy in love with her. At the time that our story takes place a relatively famous, acclaimed and talented photo-reporter, called Demeter Játékos (Demeter Playful) loses confidence in his talents. It is not known what has lead up to this. Perhaps a failure, an enforced break, or something else. He has become so insecure that now he is unable to take care of himself – he can’t even put his clothes on. His wife tries to help his strange depression, but mostly she just waits. The photographer’s brother, Krisztián, lives with them; his girlfriend has left him. He is roaming about the town, chasing women, but nothing works out for him. One day he makes an unexpected announcement: someone will come to stay at their place.

In 1962, when Gagarin flew into space and World War III almost broke out, it didn’t seem like much was going to happen in the next thirty years. Everything would remain as it was. In fact, Uncle Simon, the block warden who was continuously guarding the social order and morals with unremitting enthusiasm, made sure of it. Under his alert and guarding eyes lived the inhabitants of the block flats whose lives seemed to be written by the songs of their time. But because of “who knows what?” the “good life” came. Blocks of flats came alive. Hell left. Everybody applied for “Who knows what?” just for the chance to win the freedom of traveling to the world-wide youth meeting in Helsinki. Helsinki was THE WEST. Heck, with the semolina noodles it was almost America – the sweet life itself! After several complications it turned out that one’s destiny wasn’t left to chance and chance alone. This wasn’t such a big problem if people simply loved to live. And they did.

At a time when everybody else would like to escape to the West an adolescent boy returns home from America to spread rock’n’roll… In the spring of 1963 Miki and his parents leave behind the American dream and after four years away return to Budapest. Back in Hungary revolutionaries and counter-revolutionaries alike regard Miki’s jobless father with suspicion, while Miki – who is a great guitarist and singer with dreams of becoming the next Jerry Lee Lewis – is not accepted by his former friends whose new leader, Röne is referred to as the „Kingfisher”. His first love, Vera, now has a new boyfriend.
Miki is left with but one choice: to apply to a talent show and prove to everybody that he has a place in this old-new world. He is a great success and with his American music he casts a spell on his young audience. As the final is approaching it becomes clearer and clearer to Miki that with his victory he can gain his friends’ appreciation, win back his love and even save his father’s life.

A day in the life of a small, rural Hungarian family during the riots of September 2006. The adult son of the family slips and falls during the morning feeding round and lies unconscious in the pigpen. The town also wakes up and goes about its business but nobody notices. The constant radio chatter brings the outside world in, echoing the cultural and political pulse of Hungary. As the day ends and the sun sets, the story also unwinds, but not without the proverbial irony we know life to have.

At first glance, Tibor Malkáv is an ordinary 37-year-old man, having serious communication problems. He is precise and silent. Though not rich, he can buy whatever he needs. He doesn’t depend on his job financially. He loves being a forensic pathologist.
A few floors up in the hospital where he works lies his mother with cancer in her spinal cord. No matter how speechless or shallow this relationship is, Malkáv has no other relatives. He promises he will not let her die.
But the surgery can only be performed in Sweden and the cost is far beyond Malkáv’s means. One day a one-eyed person introducing himself as the Cyclops sits at his dinner table and makes him an offer: if Malkáv kills an unknown person, the Cyclops will provide the money for the Swedish hospital. Malkáv takes the job.
A few days later he kills the person he had never met before.
Soon it turns out to be the greatest mistake of his life.
Two days later Malkáv receives a letter – from his own victim. Szirmai must have posted it on the day of his death. In the letter he says he wants to meet Malkáv, because he found out that they had the same father – whom they had never met – so they are brothers.
And so the investigation starts, with the murderer trying to find out who his victim was…
